Lakes Entrance, and the Gippsland Lakes, are home to the rare and endangered Burranun Dolphins.
Originally, the dolphins in the Gippsland Lakes were thought to be a more common variety, until several years ago a researcher discovered the gene pool was distinctly different than other dolphins around Australia.
Eventually, it was discovered that the Burranun Dolphins are only found in the Gippsland Lakes, Port Phillip Bay and on the East Coast of Tasmania.
If you want to see them up close, good vantage points are Bullock Island, and often times along the shores of Cunningham Arm. Or, take a cruise on one of the several Charter Cruise boats in Lakes Entrance and see them in their natural habitat.
